What can dance do for your child? A mother's perspective...
Sorren was probably the youngest one in that class. The first time we went he cried through over half the class. Week after week we kept going back. He kept crying through classes. Sometimes they'd have to carry him back into the class, and once or twice we had to pull him out early because he was so hysterical. Many times I thought I should just pull him out and try again next year. After every class I would anxiously ask his teacher Ryann if she thought he'd ever adjust. Every time, without hesitation, she said that he is doing great and will get accustomed to it.
It took from the end of August until after Christmas break before we began to see the light. And then one day he just ran back to the class when they called, didn't cry at all during the class and acted like he'd been fine with it all along.
I was so happy that he was starting to enjoy the classes. He would talk about dance at home all the time and show us the cool things he was learning. However, I had serious doubts about the upcoming recital. It was one thing to do tumbling in a room with people he was now comfortable with, and another thing entirely to do it on stage with lights, loud music and a crowd. But again, his teachers all seemed 100% confident in his abilities.
The recital came, the auditorium was absolutely packed... and Sorren got up on stage and absolutely rocked it. Not a hint of anxiety and he seemed to be having a blast. Afterwards, he ran into his dad's arms and shouted "I DID IT!" He was so proud of himself! And rightly so.
Enrolling Sorren into Ryann's Dance Academy has been such a beautiful blessing. Not only has it improved his confidence just in class, but it has bled over into every facet of his daily life. He's so self-assured now! He talks to people in stores and at the park. He initiates entire conversations with other kids and their parents. He would not have ever done that before. It doesn't take him hours to warm up to people he's known forever anymore. Even at home he's more outgoing and it just feels like he's somehow full of this new brightness and energy. It's like the weight of his own anxiety was released.
Without his teachers unwavering confidence in his ability to persevere through his uncomfortable feelings of anxiety, I wonder all the time if he would be the child he is today. My instincts say no, he would not be in the same place he is today without Ryann's Dance Academy.

In Loving Memory ~ Ella Leonard
November 7, 2003~July 23, 2023
Our beautiful sweet Ella had a love for dance and was involved with our competition team. On July 23, 2023 Ella lost her life in a car accident. Ella was an organ donor and was able to to donate all her major organs, with her heart going to a 15 year old girl. We will forever miss Ella, she was such a beautiful soul. Rest in peace sweet girl. RDA will always honor Ella and have created the Ella Leonard Memorial Scholarship available to all our competition kids to apply for. The winners will be announced at every recital in April. Applications will be available in April 2025. Last year we gave out 15 scholarships!
